The Future of Human Evolution: Has the Movie "Idiocracy" Got It Right?
In an appalling and hilarious movie, "Idiocracy," Mike Judge depicts a dystopia, 500 years in the future, in which everyone is dim-witted (except two time travellers from the early 21st century). A prologue vividly illustrates a problem that seems to portend a decline in average human intelligence: people with high IQ are reproducing at a rate well below replacement level, while reproduction in the bottom strata of our meritocratic society is much more prolific. In The Mermaid's Tale blog, a Penn State Professor of Anthropology and Genetics and an Assistant Prof. of Anthropology at Northeastern Illinois University contend that this birthrate skew is nothing to worry about. I weighed in yesterday with some dissenting comments. Catch the argument here: http://ecodevoevo.blogspot.com/2011/01/idiocracy-is-always-looming-but-not.html#comment-form
